We have developed a number of core sunlighting systems that deliver sunlight deep inside a building. These systems have the potential to substantially reduce the need for electric lighting
and therefore reduce the electrical energy requirements of the building, while at the same time dramatically improving the quality of the lighting in the space. Core sunlighting systems
typically incorporate two main components: an adaptive collection system that tracks the sun position throughout the day and directs the sunlight into the building, and a luminaire that
efficiently distributes the sunlight within the building. The luminaires are integrated with auxiliary electric lights to ensure that the desired illuminance is maintained when the intensity
of the available sunlight is inadequate. Core sunlighting systems of this type can enable electric lights to be turned off in a significant portion of the building whenever the sun shines.
